Backyard Habitat Certification Program Changes for Eastside Residents

We want to share some news with you. Unfortunately, Backyard Habitat is temporarily pausing new enrollments for residents on the east side of Portland (east of the Willamette River). This is not a decision we arrived at lightly but is necessary to address current budgetary limitations, specific to this geographic area.

In recent years, the program has experienced its highest enrollment rates on the east side of Portland, where we have the least amount of funding available to operate. Since Backyard Habitat’s inception, generous support from cities, public agencies, and organizations have helped fund the program, allowing us to make enrollment affordable to the public. Our funding is geographically restricted and the limited funds available for the east side of Portland don’t cover our costs for the area, at this time.

Note: Our partnership projects in the east side of Portland, specifically with Verde and People of Color Outdoors (POCO), funded through East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District, will continue as usual. Additionally, we will still offer certification visits, renewals, and certification benefits to existing program participants on the east side of Portland!

We are thrilled with the level of interest in our program! It’s one of our top priorities to continue working to identify funding sources to meet this demand and to help ensure sustainable programming throughout Portland. We ask people on the east side of Portland who are interested in the program to continue to sign up through the enrollment page on our website. They will be placed on a waitlist, and informed as soon as we are able to move forward with new enrollments.

The program is continuing to run strong in the rest of our 4-county service area thanks to all of our funders, donors, volunteers, and participants who make this important program possible.
