We’re thankful for the hard work of Bird Ally X who runs the emergency response hospital set up to treat botulism patients. And we’re grateful to the refuge staff for their work to rescue sick birds and remove dead birds whose presence worsens the outbreak. Many bird species have been affected, from waterfowl to shorebirds to songbirds, like Northern Shovelers, Black-necked Stilts, Northern Pintails, and Red-winged Blackbirds.
The birds need our voices, our advocacy, and our support. Here are a few ways you can make a difference during the disaster and into the future:
-
-
- Sign up to be an Bird Alliance of Oregon activist so you can advocate for the Klamath National Wildlife Refuges and the birds that depend on them.
- Sign up to be a volunteer with Bird Ally X. Over the next few weeks they need as much help as possible to treat botulism patients.
- Make a donation to Bird Ally X to help support this urgent work.
- Make a donation to Bird Alliance of Oregon to help us advocate for the refuges.

The Klamath Basin provides critical habitat for breeding and migrating birds. This time of year, more than a million birds can be found at the refuges. And those birds all depend on water. They need all of us to advocate for them, and to help restore hydrologic health to the region.
