Tip of the Week: The Problem with Feeding Ducks
Did you know that feeding ducks bread can be really bad for their health. Bread is basically junk food for ducks and especially for young developing ducks, can lead to nutritional imbalances and deficiencies. A common problem we see in young ducks brought to Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Wildlife Care Center is something called “Angel Wing.” This condition is common in young ducks who consume a lot of bread. The poor diet causes the bird’s feathers and wrist joint to develop out of sync. When the feathers grow too large and heavy before the joint is strong enough to support them, it pulls the joint out of alignment and results in the twisting of the wrist (as shown in this photo). Unfortunately this condition is not reversible and these birds cannot fly and face a minimal chance of survival. Although it is done with good intentions, it is best not to feed wild ducks and instead allow them to them forage for their own natural foods.
