10 Birds to Know

Getting interested in birds? Here are ten species that are easily found and will give you practice in observation and listening. Meet backyard birds like the Song Sparrow, Northern Flicker, and California Scrub-Jay along with species beyond the backyard like Great Blue Heron, Osprey, and Red-winged Blackbird.

We’ll also discuss field guides, apps, and other ways to learn.

Laura Whittemore

Laura Whittemore spent her formative birding decades in the Pacific Northwest, learning from mentors, exploring the region’s varied habitats and birdlife, and eventually leading Birdathon teams and teaching countless classes for Bird Alliance of Oregon. She now resides in southern Wisconsin and is getting to know the flow of birdlife in a new region. Her goal in teaching is to instill confidence in newer birders and inspire them to explore the amazing habitats of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
