500 Million Years in Oregon
Have you ever been hiking and wondered how and when all these different plants and animals got here? Maybe you’ve heard about a species, such as House Sparrows, being called “invasive” – when exactly did they “invade”, and from where?
In this program, we will take a look at Oregon’s wildlife and think about when they first evolved, how they are related, and when they showed up here in Oregon. This will be a crash course in evolutionary biology, diving through 500 million years of history. Along the way we will ask fun and bizarre questions, like: Which is older, the Cascades mountain range or whales? Did sharks evolve before trees? Are there still dinosaurs living among us? Are horses native to Oregon? When did opossums first set foot in Oregon?
This webinar is aimed at anybody with an interest in wildlife and a curiosity about the natural world. No prior knowledge of evolutionary biology or geology is required.
