Birding Day: From Seabirds to Songbirds, a Day in Newport

This is a self-driving day trip. Newport is a little more than a two-hour drive from Portland.

We will meet on the coast at 7:45 a.m. at Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint for a sea watch. There are lots of potential targets, depending on the conditions. It is a great time of the year for tubenoses (Sooty Shearwater, Fork-tailed Storm Petrel), alcids (Common Murre, Pigeon Guillemot), loons, and waterfowl to move south.

In Newport, we will work the south jetty and walk the trail at the Marine Science Center. Other classic stops are the LNG Tank (Sally’s Bend) and South Beach State Park for Snowy Plover.

And, of course, if there is anything unusual around, Stefan will build that into the itinerary. The day will likely end at the Salishan Nature Trail near Gleneden Beach around 4 p.m.
