Bird Alliance of Oregon Birding Day: Winter Birding on Sauvie Island with Brodie Cass Talbott *FULL*

We’ll start our day on Rentenaar Road with a one- to two-mile hike enjoying songbirds, and keeping an eye out for Harris’s, Swamp, and Lincoln’s Sparrow, as well as Black Phoebe and Sandhill Crane. A stop at the Eastside Viewing Platform will give us a great opportunity to study dabbling ducks, while a short hike at Willow Bar should give decent views of diving ducks. We’ll end our day at Racoon Point, scanning for Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, and any of the other eight possible diurnal raptors.

This trip will feature 2-3 miles of hiking, mostly along flat gravel roads and unpaved forest trails and beaches. Porta-johns will be available at several stops. The weather will likely be cold with a chance of rain, so please come prepared with adequate weather gear, as well as food and water.

Participants will drive themselves and will need a Sauvie Island ODFW Parking Pass.

$65 – $85

Rest stops: We will be visiting 3-4 locations, with breaks in between. No rest stops on our walk.
Sun exposure: Full (hopefully!)
Amenities (bathrooms and parking): Ample parking at all of our locations; participants need an ODFW Parking Pass. Each stop will have a portapotty.

Walking distance: Up to 1.5 miles total.
Elevation changes: None, except for one very short hill up to the dike at Racoon Point
Trail: Most of our walking will be along a dirt road, with patches of mud and some coarse rocks
Pacing: Slow
