Birding Day: Upstream on the Columbia River
This is a self-driving trip and will start at Deschutes River Park and end in The Dalles.
Less than two hours from Portland, the Columbia River on the lee side of the Cascades presents remarkably different landscapes. On this full-day, self-driving trip, we’ll explore the rivers around The Dalles, visiting a variety of habitats as we make our west to our ending point in The Dalles. Scanning the river, we may find Common or Pacific Loons, Surf Scoter, or Red-necked Grebe, and at Lone Pine, we’ll have an opportunity to work on our gull ID and look for uncommon species.
Make sure to bring lunch and come prepared for the weather.
Amenities: Most stops will have access to restrooms.
Public Transit: None
Sun exposure: It is often cloudy in November in The Dalles, but we will have full exposure throughout. Sun protection, and rain protection, are recommended.
Rest Stops: We will have rest stops between stops.
Accessibility
Distance: Many short walks throughout the day, up to 1.5 miles. Total likely under 4 miles.
Pacing: Slow, with frequent stops at benches to view and listen for birds.
Elevation Changes: Mostly flat.
Trail Tread: A variety of treads, including grass, gravel, and paved trails.
Visit the dry side of the Columbia River!
Late fall along the dry side of the Columbia River is a great time to look for unusual species like loons, grebes, gulls, and raptors.
