Birding Day: Advanced Winter Raptor Identification in Polk County
This more advanced raptor trip will explore the raptor-rich farmlands of Polk county, searching out as many species of hawks and falcons as possible, and keeping an eye out for Short-eared Owl on the wing as dusk approaches.
Rest stops: We will have rest stops between our stops. There are no benches on our hike at Baskett Butte.
Sun exposure: Full
Amenities (bathrooms and parking): Some of our stops will be along low-traffic farm roads – wherever the raptors are. Others will have full parking lots. Please let us know if you are interested in carpooling. There is one portapotty at Baskett Slough NWR. Otherwise, we will have limited opportunities.
Accessibility
Distance: Up to 1 mile total
Elevation changes: Most of our birding will be stationary stops. There is one hike we do where we will climb Baskett Butte. This hike is a gently ascending trail that climbs ~250 feet in elevation.
Trail: Wide gravel trail
