The Bird Days of Summer: Faces Only a MOTH-er Could Love
Join bug nerds Fern Wexler, Eleni Kondilis, and Brodie Cass Talbott as we explore the sanctuary at night, looking for the wide variety of moths that only come out after dark.
Along the way we’ll learn about their life history and evolution, and keep an eye out for the other nocturnal denizens of the Bird Alliance of Oregon Sanctuary. Make sure to bring a headlamp!
Accessibility
Distance: Less than one mile. We may venture out onto the trails, heading down to the creek or pond, but much of the moth watching will be around the buildings (where they are attracted to lights). No matter where we go, it will be dark, and the trail is uneven, so this program is not recommended for those with mobility issues.
Elevation Changes: There is around 100 feet of elevation from the parking lot down to the pond.
Trail Tread and Width: narrow, rocky single track trail. Uneven surfaces can be even more difficult in low-light situations.
Exposure: Minimal due to time of day.
Pacing: We will mostly be staying in certain areas for 10-30 minutes at a time, examining the moths and other insects of the area. A short possible hike to the pond will be slow.
Amenities: Unlocking the buildings for bathrooms is possible.
Public Transit: Unfortunately, there is no public transportation at this site. Please contact the trip leaders and they may be able to find others who are interested in carpooling.
Rest Stops: None.

We’re combining community-building, exploration, and fun to create safe spaces for people to get to know each other as well as the birds.
