The Bird Days of Summer: Hike & Bird Little Crater Lake
Join Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Education Team for The Bird Days of Summer, a series of super beginner-friendly programs for anyone curious about birds in nature. We’re combining community-building, exploration, and fun to create safe spaces for people to get to know each other as well as the birds. Binoculars will be provided, and we’ll begin each program with a short “how-to” to help you get started.
Brodie Cass Talbott and Candace Larson will guide you on a day of nature exploration in this very special landscape on the east side of Mt. Hood. Little Crater Lake is a unique, turquoise pool formed by a volcanic artesian spring, surrounded by meadows and forests. We’ll hike up to 6 miles as we investigate various habitats for a variety of late summer birds, butterflies and dragonflies.
Accessibility: Trail is mostly unpaved, well-graded with minimal elevation change, part sun and part shade. We will travel at a moderate pace, stopping frequently to look for birds and other wildlife; total distance will depend on what we see, but expect to hike about 6 miles, round trip.
Meeting Place and Timing: 8:30 a.m. to 3:00pm, plus commute (trailhead is about 100 minutes from Portland.) We will meet at 8:30 a.m. sharp at the Little Crater Lake Trailhead. A $10 day use pass, or NW Forest Pass is required for parking.
What to bring: Sturdy footwear (hiking boots or trail runners) is required. Make sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a sack lunch. Binoculars are recommended for watching wildlife.
Limited to 8 participants plus leaders.
