Beginner Birders Meetup with Greg Smith *FULL*
Ever wonder what birds are in your area? Want to sharpen your skills for your exciting new hobby? Or are you looking for a reason to get outside during the dreary winter months? Join us at Whitaker Ponds! We’ll cover bird identification basics, tips for using binoculars, and answer any questions about birding.
This outing is a great way to get introduced to your new favorite hobby, led by Gregory Smith, a local birder and wildlife biologist. Come experience the wonder of birds up close and learn what makes winter birding special! This field trip is geared toward beginning birders only.
Please be mindful that space is limited and free programs fill up quickly. We ask that if you need to cancel, you give us at least one week notice so we can try to fill your spot. 1 registration allowed per person.
Accessibility
Distance: Up to 1 mile. Total distance will depend on the needs of the group. Great access to nature can be seen within the first ⅛ of a mile.
Pacing: Slow, with frequent stops to view and listen for birds.
Elevation Changes: None
Trail Tread: Trails are flat, and typically 4-6 feet wide with gravel tread. There are two wooden ramps with gentle pitch down to the pond and the slough.
Bathrooms: There is one ADA-accessible portapotty at the site in the parking lot.
Parking: Large parking lot
Public Transit: TriMet bus #75 makes a stop at the corner of NE 47th Avenue and Columbia Blvd and visitors can walk north from there to the park entrance.
Seating: None, but we will move slowly and can stop at any time.

Class fee: FREE, just RSVP. Donations are greatly appreciated to help with scholarships for future free and sliding scale programs, but are not required.
