Field Trip: Birding for Beginners at Powell Butte
Powell Butte, a large volcanic butte in SE Portland, is a well-known birding hotspot because of its expansive greenspace and mic of habitats. On this beginner-friendly walk, we’ll start with the basics: how to narrow down birds into their families by using their shape and size, helpful field marks for common birds, and the first steps in trying to identify birds by ear.
Masks are optional on the outdoor portion of this program.
Pacing: Slow, with frequent stops to view and listen for birds.
Amenities: Bathrooms are available at the parking lot, which has ample free parking. It is recommended to not leave any valuables in your car.
Public Transit: The area is served by the #15 Trimet bus which has a stop .25 miles away.
Rest Stops: None with benches, but we will move slowly
