Heceta Bank: Oregon’s Hidden Wonder (Film Screening)

The little-known Heceta Bank is one of the most productive areas on the Oregon coast and a hotspot for biological productivity due to its position and the influence of northern coastal currents in summers. Join OSU marine scientists and other experts to screen a new, short documentary (26 minutes) featuring the submerged bank, located 35 miles off the Oregon coast, and learn about the surprising and beneficial impacts it has on our state’s coastal environments.

Introducing the film will be Joe Liebezeit, Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Staff Scientist & Avian Conservation Program Manager. Joe will share the critical importance of Heceta Bank for avian species like the Short-Tailed Albatross, Black-footed Albatross, and Pink-footed Shearwater. Then following the screening, a panel, which includes Paul Engelmeyer, Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Ten Mile Sanctuary Manager, will hold a discussion about Heceta Bank, including a Q&A session.

A special thank you to Oregon State Productions and Marine Studies Initiative for your research and allowing us to screen your film.

About the Panelists

Jack Barth, Executive Director, Marine Studies Initiative, and Professor of Oceanography, Oregon State University
Jack Barth is the Executive Director of Oregon State University’s Marine Studies Initiative. He is also a Professor of oceanography in Oregon State University’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS). Jack’s research seeks to understand how coastal ocean circulation and water properties shape and influence coastal marine ecosystems. He has led a number of research, technology development and ocean observing system projects off Oregon and around the world.

Bill Pearcy, Professor Emeritus, College of Earth, Ocean, & Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University
During his time at OSU, Dr. Pearcy studied ocean ecology and fishes. In 1960, He became one of the first faculty members in the Department of Oceanography and is considered a world-renowned authority on many aspects of biological oceanography.

Paul Engelmeyer, Field Organizer, Bird Alliance of Oregon
Paul manages Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Ten Mile Creek Sanctuary near Yachats, Oregon. His work includes watershed restoration, species recovery and marine conservation efforts, and he has worked for decades to develop partnerships that have grown into a basin-wide habitat protection program on the central Oregon coast.

David Baker, Director, Oregon State Productions
David’s work at Oregon State Productions aims to advance the university’s land-grant mission, and he enjoys telling the stories of students and scientists at OSU. He also teaches a documentary film studies course.

Annie Lindren, Director, Center for Life in Extreme Environments, and Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, Portland State University
Dr. Annie Lindgren has served as the Coordinator of CLEE since 2011, and Director since 2018. She serves as the Chair of the Steering Committee and oversees day-to-day operations of the center. A deep-sea biologist, Dr. Lindgren also teaches, mentors students and conducts independent research.

Lindsay Adrean, Faculty Research Assistant, Forest Engineering, Resources & Management. Oregon State University, Lead Faculty Research Assistant for the Oregon Marbled Murrelet Project
Lindsay received her M.S. in Wildlife Science from Oregon State University in 2011 where her thesis examined Caspian Tern predation of threatened juvenile salmonids in San Francisco Bay. She subsequently spent four years working for the state of Oregon to investigate avian predation of juvenile salmon in Oregon’s estuaries. In her current position as a faculty research assistant at OSU, Lindsay is researching the reproductive success of the threatened Marbled Murrelet, with field work conducted at-sea, in the forest, and in the air.

Amanda Gladics, Assistant Professor of Practice, Oregon Sea Grant Extension, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University
Based at the Oregon State University Extension – Clatsop County office in Astoria, Amanda Gladics provides community education programs that foster sustainability of fishery resources, and the public’s understanding of those resources. She works closely with commercial fishermen, researchers, and managers to develop innovative solutions for reducing bycatch fisheries, and conducts public education for coastal residents and visitors through a variety of community outreach and engagement efforts.
