Finding Families: A Different Approach to Listing Wildlife
Species listing is the norm when it comes to birding, or pretty much any wildlife-observation for that matter. When someone asks about your life list, or year list, or yard list, they are implicitly asking how many species you have seen in a given area or time period. But what if there was a different way to group organisms that could make wildlife-watching, including birding, more satisfying?
In this webinar, we will talk about a different way to approach how you target animals to see, whether you are in your local park or on a trip half a world away. This alternate approach is family listing: aiming not to check off every species of sparrow, say, in your area, but to observe as much familial diversity as possible, from birds to reptiles to mammals.
We will discuss taxonomic classification and what makes a species, as well as cover family-level diversity in not only birds but also mammals, insects, fishes, and more, to make a case for why listing families can be more rewarding than the traditional way of searching for and ticking off every species around.
