Pacific Northwest Trip: Malheur Foray
Join Bird Alliance of Oregon on this five-day tour to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge filled with wondrous sights, chilly nights, and lots of birds. The elevation is about 4,000 feet, and the snow-capped Steens Mountain looms on our horizon the entire time. We’ll find that a variety of habitats, including extensive marshes, sagebrush flats, riparian thickets, and rimrock support an astounding diversity of wildlife. We’ll search for Long-billed Curlew, Black-necked Stilt, White-faced Ibis, Burrowing Owl, Bobolink, and Sandhill Crane as well as mammals such as Pronghorn, Coyote, and Mule Deer.
Highlights of our classic Malheur trip include an afternoon spin down “raptor alley” hoping for visits with Golden Eagle, Ferruginous Hawk, and Prairie Falcon; a leisurely ramble around the grounds of Refuge Headquarters, a famous songbird oasis in the high desert; and birding the beautiful Catlow Valley and the famous Fields Oasis, where Great Horned Owls are known to nest, along with a wide variety of migrant songbirds.
