Nature Night: Dan Roby presents “A Groundbreaking Technique That’s Saving Endangered Species From Extinction”
Join retired Oregon State Professor Dr. Dan Roby for an interactive presentation about how a controversial birding practice has emerged as a critical piece in conservation.
Over the last 20 years, Dan has been involved in research and restoration projects that use social attraction methods (decoys and audio playback) to encourage seabirds to nest at breeding sites where they can safely reproduce. Dan has used social attraction techniques to help restore seabirds that have suffered long-term impacts from the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, to establish alternative breeding colony sites for fish-eating seabirds that consume significant numbers of threatened salmon and steelhead throughout the Pacific Northwest, and to attempt to rescue from the brink of extinction the Chinese crested tern, a critically endangered seabird species that was believed extinct for over 60 years. Learn more about these essential projects, what it means for endangered bird conservation’s future, and test your birding ear with some of Dan’s sample playbacks!
About Nature Night
Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Speaker Series returns with a set of interesting topics and engaging speakers that will be sure to draw the masses. While the Series will remain free to attend, we highly encourage a suggested donation of $5-$20 from those who are able.
