Excursion: Oak Island Exploration

Join Dan van den Broek and Candace Larson as we explore the natural history of this delightful and diverse Sauvie Island hotspot. After a virtual orientation to the island on Thursday, we’ll lace up our hiking shoes Friday morning. We’ll wander along a wide and flat 2-mile trail through grasslands, Oak woodlands and lakeshore, looking for birds, butterflies and dragonflies galore. Early July is a great time to encounter a wide variety of breeding songbirds as well as woodpeckers, raptors and the occasional shorebird as well.

*You must take the virtual class if you plan to attend the excursion. The excursion is limited to 8 participants, in order to maintain strict physical distancing in the field.

Class Details

  • Outing: July 10, 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
  • Outing fee: $65 members / $85 non-members
  • You must register separately and take the Oak Island virtual class on July 9 to participate in the outing.

Mandatory guidelines: 

  • Stay home if you or a member in your household have any symptoms, or if  you have been in contact with anyone with these symptoms:
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
  • Everyone drive on their own, with members of their household
  • Everybody must wear a face covering at all times
  • No scopes, no sharing of equipment
  • Everybody remain at least 6 feet apart at all times
  • No more than 10 people, plus the instructor
  • Destinations must be within 50 miles of Portland
  • Only go to locations with plenty of room to stay safe:
    • Wide, open spaces are best
    • No crowded trails – limit to early morning walks and/or weekdays
    • Prioritize trails that are one-directional
    • Prioritize locations with trails at least 6-feet wide

Dan van den Broek

Dan has over 15 years of experience leading international birding trips and teaching classes for Bird Alliance of Oregon. With prior experiences at Point Reyes Bird Observatory, Redwood Sciences Lab, Klamath Bird Observatory, Costa Rica Bird Observatory, and Avifauna Northwest, Dan brings immense enthusiasm and passion for birds and natural history to all of his trips.

Meet the Instructor

Candace Larson

Candace is an avid birder, mycology geek, and native plant enthusiast, with a passion for the diverse ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. Candace leads domestic and international ecotours and teaches classes with a focus on bird biology and habitat preservation. She also works as a Field Biologist in Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Conservation program, helping statewide partners meet their avian conservation goals.
