Birds like loons, grebes, turnstones, sea ducks, and more visit our coastal rocky shores and nearshore waters only in winter, so now’s the time to learn what to expect, where to look, and how to separate them by habitat, behavior, shape, plumage, and even voice. Learn about not only the visitors but the year-round species, too.

Laura Whittemore

Laura Whittemore spent her formative birding decades in the Pacific Northwest, learning from mentors, exploring the region’s varied habitats and birdlife, and eventually leading Birdathon teams and teaching countless classes for Bird Alliance of Oregon. She now resides in southern Wisconsin and is getting to know the flow of birdlife in a new region. Her goal in teaching is to instill confidence in newer birders and inspire them to explore the amazing habitats of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
