Pacific Northwest Trip: Oregon’s Wild Southern Coast with Brodie Cass Talbott
Escape the crowds (and maybe even the rain!) with a trip to Oregon’s rugged South Coast. The least developed part of the Oregon Coast, with one of the highest densities of parkland in the nation, Coos and Curry Counties boast incredible landscapes and bountiful wildlife.
On this three-day, self-catered trip we’ll visit some of the top birding sites in the state, searching for Marbled Murrelets at Cape Arago, watching for waders and White-tailed Kites at Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, and enjoying Black Oystercatchers and Black Turnstones at Chetco Point. With luck, we may catch up with a Snowy Egret along the Rogue River, or an Elegant Tern near the California border. And of course, we’ll stop in at Simpson Reef to enjoy the spectacle of hundreds of seals and sea lions.
Participants will rendezvous at 9:30 a.m. in Coos Bay, where we will overnight on Friday night after a full day of birding the area. On Saturday we will head south, exploring hotspots en route to our Saturday night lodging in Brookings. On Sunday, we will explore the Brookings area before making our way north, ending our day around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, in the Coos Bay area.
Each day will feature short to medium-length hikes on mostly flat ground, but we will also be walking on sandy beaches for some parts of the trip. There will be no strenuous hikes, but there may be long days of sun exposure. Participants should come prepared for the elements.
This is a self-catering trip, and participants will provide their own accommodations as well as meals. We’ll stop both days for a picnic lunch along the route.
All COVID-19 safety protocols dictated by the Oregon Health Authority will be followed on our outdoor programs. Masks are mandatory.
