Pacific Northwest Trip: Rogue Valley – Southern Oregon Birding with Brodie Cass Talbott *FULL*

California birds, in Oregon! On this three-day ramble through the beautiful Rogue Valley, we will search for some of Oregon’s hardest to find species, such as Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Oak Titmouse, and California Towhee. We’ll explore a variety of habitats, from grasslands that may hold Grasshopper Sparrow, to mountain forests and prairies, where Great Gray Owl breed (but require luck to see), and the famous Oak forests of Southern Oregon that teem with Acorn Woodpecker and Ash-throated Flycatcher. Along the way we’ll hope for chance encounters with Northern Mockingbird, Black Phoebe, and other local favorites.

*This is a self-guided tour. Lodging (book ahead of time), meals, transportation, and park entrance fees are your responsibility. Brodie will send out details about where the group will meet-up before the trip, and then guide you through birding the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon. We will be based out of Ashland. For a three-star hotel recommendation, we recommend Ashland Springs Hotel, but there are a number of options in the area.

Trip Details

  • Trip Leader: Brodie Cass Talbott
  • Fee: $300 members / $390 non-members
  • Group size: Limited to 10 participants
  • What is included: the services of your experienced Bird Alliance of Oregon leader. *This is a self-guided tour. Lodging, meals, transportation, and park entrance fees are your responsibility.

Mandatory COVID guidelines: 

  • Stay home if you or a member in your household have any symptoms, or if you have been in contact with anyone with these symptoms:
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
  • Everyone drive on their own, with members of their household
  • Everybody must wear a face covering at all times
  • Everybody remain at least 6 feet apart at all times
  • No more than 10 people, plus the instructor
  • Only go to locations with plenty of room to stay safe:
    • Wide, open spaces are best
    • No crowded trails – limit to early morning walks and/or weekdays
    • Prioritize trails that are one-directional
    • Prioritize locations with trails at least 6-feet wide

Brodie Cass Talbott

Brodie works as an educator with Bird Alliance of Oregon. After many years of wildland firefighting and leading river tours, he spent six years living and teaching across Asia, where his interest in birds became his passion. He has birded across five continents, and uses his experience in education and ecotourism to share his love of the outdoors with people from all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, with an eye towards increasing access to wild spaces for people from diverse communities.
