Science on Tap: Efforts to Protect and Restore the Western Snowy Plover
Enjoy a pint and bite to eat while learning about the threatened Western Snowy Plover and Plover Patrol, a community science program co-managed by Bird Alliance of Oregon and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department that monitors Snowy Plovers on Oregon’s north coast. The Western Snowy Plover is a small shorebird that resides and nests on sandy beaches along the Pacific coast; however, the Pacific Coast Population significantly declined throughout the 20th century due to habitat loss, predation, and human-caused disturbance. The coastal population was federally listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1993 but has increased in Oregon since this listing through targeted management actions. Snowy Plovers have returned to the north coast just in the last 10 years. Join Cara Gates, Coastal Community Science Biologist, for this talk to learn more about how Snowy Plovers are recolonizing the north coast and what Plover Patrol does to help.
This talk is free and open to the public, although space will be limited. The event is in-person only at Pelican Brewing Company in Pacific City.
When: December 18, 6 – 8 p.m.
