The Gems of the Silk Road

Join Stefan for a birding adventure along the Silk Road, from Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan. On this exciting and special journey into the heart of Central Asia’s vast landscapes of steppe, desert, and mountains, we’ll encounter a a myriad of birds found nowhere else, and combine it with visits to historical sites along the Silk Road.

In Uzbekistan, we’ll visit the historically important cities of Bukhara, Tashkent, and Samarqand. Samarkand, the crown-jewel (Registan and Bibi Khanum) and the minarets (towers typically built into or adjacent to mosques) and bazaars of Bukhara, where the entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, proves the significance of these special places. Our local birding guide is also an expert in Central Asian culture so this trip really is the perfect blend of culture and birds!

We will start the trip in Tashkent in Uzbekistan where we will be for about a week. Near Tashkent we will look for Asian Paradise-Flycatcher, the Yellow-breasted Azure Tit, Rufous-naped Tit, near Bukhara for White-tailed Lapwing and Ménétrie’s Warbler and in the Kyzyl-Kum desert the near-endemic Pander’s Ground-Jay in the Kyzyl-Kum desert.

Next up is Kazakhstan, a remote and huge country with birds that are difficult to find elsewhere. We’ll fly to Astana and spend two days in Kazakhstan’s never-ending steppes in the Korgalzhyn area up north. Sociable Lapwing, Black-winged Pratincole, Black and White-winged Lark, Demoiselle Crane, Red-footed Falcon and Pallid Harrier are just some of the targets in this area. On the last day, we will take a flight to Almaty.

In the steppes of Kanshengel, Caspian Plover, McQueen’s Bustard, Dalmatian Pelican, Imperial Eagle and Desert Finch await us. At the Ili River area, we will search for Syke’s Warbler, Yellow-eyed Pigeon, White-winged Woodpecker and Pallid Scops-Owl.

Our tour will end in Almaty where we’ll visit the stunning Big Almaty Lake in the mountains. We will try for Himalayan Snowcock, Altai and Brown Accentor, the famed Ibisbill, Guldenstadt’s and Eversmann’s Redstart, Red-mantled Rosefinch and a few species of warbler.
