Watercolor Painting In-Person with Ronna: The Barn Swallow

*This is an in-person art class held at Bird Alliance of Oregon.

Come join Ronna in-person to paint, as she introduces several techniques on how to paint birds in watercolor. 

The much loved Barn Swallow is the world’s most widespread and well-known swallow. This in-person watercolor class with Ronna Fujisawa will be nothing but fun as we explore various blues and warm oranges to create a lovely watercolor of our favorite swallow. Come learn how to paint birds eyes in detail and loose feathers with a flick of the brush. With great joy, we offer this once a month in-person bird watercolor class alongside Ronna to learn about birds through watercolor painting.

The birds will be painted from photographs supplied by Ronna as she explains the step-by-step process she has mastered in painting birds. In this three-hour class, students will paint several studies and one final painting. At the end of each class, there will be time to critique everyone’s work and get supportive feedback from Ronna and other classmates. 

Ronna strives to build an atmosphere of learning by encouraging students to take risks, showing support and encouragement, and working alongside the class to assist in understanding watercolor painting.

In-Person Class Details

  • Fee: $55 members / $75 non-members per session
  • Where: This class will be held in the Bat Roost Classroom (in the Bird Alliance of Oregon House, downstairs from the Nature Store) at 5151 NW Cornell Road, Portland, OR 97210.
  • When: Saturday, June 15, 2024, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meet the Instructor

Ronna Fujisawa

Ronna Fujisawa, MFA in Applied Craft and Design, from OCAC and PNCA/ BFA Miami University, Oxford, Ohio Artist, art educator, and outdoor enthusiast. Ronna’s creative practice focuses on painting, mixed media, fiber art, and growing indigo for natural dye and paint. She has been living in Portland for seven years. She has found a strong connection to nature and birds through plein air (painting outdoors), watercolor painting, hiking, and kayaking. Her teaching practice includes painting classes at Catlin Gabel School Community Program for adults, Portland Fine Arts Guild, online, and plein air (painting outdoors) watercolor classes for all ages. She has taught Bird Art to elementary school children in Portland Public Schools for six years before the pandemic. Over the last two years, her educational practice has shifted to adult classes, both in-person and zoom. Ronna has been passionately studying and painting birds and landscapes in watercolor for over a decade. Her classes cater to beginner and intermediate students.
