The mix of habitats along the river create abundant opportunities for observing birds and the occasional beaver or other mammal.

Children of all ages, and families of all kinds, are invited to come for a casual walk around Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters. There should be baby hawks and owls for viewing.

Join Bird Alliance of Oregon's Eastern Oregon Biologist, Teresa 'Bird' Wicks for a guided bird walk starting at the Benson Pond Trailhead. We will travel along the northern edge of Benson Pond, through the stand of homestead era trees and back to the parking area. The diversity of aquatic habitat, emergent marsh, sagebrush/shrubland, and deciduous trees provides for a diverse assortment of bird species. This walk provides a great opportunity for observing ducks in non-breeding plumage and practicing duck ID.

Catio Tour 2024

The 2024 Catio Tour on Saturday, September 7 is self-guided and all in-person, with stops from SE Portland to Vancouver, WA. You’ll see a variety of catios (outdoor cat enclosures), talk with the people who built them, and meet the cats who enjoy them (feline attitude permitting)!
