Help Us Thank Multnomah County for Making their Buildings More Sustainable!

UPDATE: Multnomah County Commission passed a resolution to integrate bird safe building and lighting design standards into their High Performance Building Standards at their meeting on 10/19/23.

This Thursday, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners plans to pass a resolution to integrate bird safe building and lighting design standards into their High Performance Building Standards, a move that will have benefits far beyond birds. Bird safe building and lighting design has important sustainability co-benefits, including increasing energy efficiency, reducing HVAC demand, reducing carbon emissions, and reducing wasteful light and energy. This is an important milestone that will bring the County into alignment with the City of Portland and Metro Regional Government, and we want to send them a strong message of appreciation that they are making this critical decision.

Plans to develop bird friendly building and lighting policies have been on the County’s books as far back as the 2016 County Comprehensive Plan, and this is the move that we have been waiting for! Numerous jurisdictions across the nation have adopted bird safe standards in both the public and private sector, including NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto, and many others.

Please help us thank the County for taking this important measure to ensure that their own buildings are both ecologically sustainable and energy efficient.
