Bird Alliance of Oregon Birding Day: Timberline Lodge *FULL*
Join Ross as we explore the Timberline Lodge area and surrounding alpine trails in search of montane species such as Clark’s Nutcracker, Mountain Bluebird, Mountain Chickadee, and Cassin’s Finch. We will then take the chair lift to the higher elevation scree fields hoping for views of Gray-crowned Rosy-finch. Please remember to bring binoculars and appropriate layered clothing for summer weather at elevation. Also, don’t forget drinks and snacks/lunch for the duration of the trip.
Limited to 12 participants.
Meeting Location
We will meet at the Timberline Lodge Trailheads Parking. -NO fee for summer parking.
Masks are optional on this outdoor program.
Pacing: Slow, with frequent stops to view and listen for birds; mostly trail walking. Brief ski lift ride up/down to access higher elevation scree fields.
Amenities: Toilets are available at the parking lot/in the lodge.
Public Transit: TriMet (Mt. Hood Express) departs Sandy Transit Center at 7:55 am; $4.00 roundtrip bus fee.
Rest Stops: There are no rest stops or benches.
Accessibility
Distance: 3.5 miles
Elevation Changes: 150ft gain out and back; 1000ft per mile descent or ski lift down from Silcox Hut to Timberline Lodge Trailhead
Trail Tread and Width: 2 miles of moderate elevation gain on a mix of dirt and rock trails. Then 1 mile downhill from Silcox Hut to Timberline Lodge Trailhead
Exposure: Strong sun exposure throughout the walk given elevation and situation at treeline, use of sunscreen is advised.
