Field Class: Nature Connection and Writing Workshop at Smith and Bybee with Julia Waters *FULL*

Join poet, birder, and nature educator Julia Waters for a sensory-based exploration of Smith and Bybee Wetlands. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to connect to nature through their senses, using the beauty of a winter wetland as inspiration. 

Participants are invited to deepen their relationship with the natural world as well as the resident birds through writing prompts and exercises and nature connection practices. There will be time to ponder, write, walk, and share, encouraging participants to connect to others, nature, and themselves.

We will be walking (up to 1.5 miles), sitting, and standing. The workshop will be held outdoors, so be sure to dress for the weather and bring rain gear if it is forecasted. Hot tea will be provided. A portable bathroom will be available. 

No birding or writing experience is necessary. Supply list is included below.

  • Fee: $30 members / $45 non-members

    • A journal (ideally waterproof, like Rite in the Rain https://www.riteintherain.com/) and pencil
    • Umbrella
    • Binoculars if you have them (we will have some to borrow as well)
    • A reusable grocery bag
    • Water and snacks

Julia Waters

Julia grew up in the Pacific Northwest and spent her upbringing steeped in creative pursuits, writing poems, songs, and piano melodies. Her connection to nature emerged during a trip to the Klamath Basin where she fell in love with the dawn chorus of the birds. This led her to earn a BS in Environmental Sociology with a Minor in Environmental Science from Oregon State University.

Julia has gathered a range of work experiences, such as tending to endangered plants for the Oregon Department of Agriculture, coordinating activities at an assisted living community, working as a barista at a community coffee shop, as well as immersing in the field of environmental education with MESD Outdoor School and Bird Alliance of Oregon. In leading writing workshops and nature connection programs, Julia is able to merge her love of nature and writing with her passion for human connection. Outside of Bird Alliance of Oregon, you might find Julia with her journal open at her favorite pond, cooking and listening to music, or on a walk with a friend.
