Field Trip: Birding by Ear: Forests (Tryon Creek)
By early May, many of our summer migrants are back, and are singing away as they try to claim territory. We’ll listen for the songs and calls of Black-headed Grosbeak, Wilson’s Warbler, and Black-throated Gray Warbler, as well as the five woodpecker species often seen here. We’ll also keep an eye out for one of the several owls that nest in the park.
Notes on accessibility: The trip will feature hiking across uneven terrain, on trails that include some mild inclines. Bathrooms are available at the visitor center. Most hiking will be in forest, with limited sun exposure. Our trip will meet at the visitor center, in the main parking lot, accessed by Terwilliger Blvd.
Practice your birding by ear skills in forested habitat.
Hone your ear birding with this field trip to one of our best urban forests.
