The Bird Days of Summer: Hike and Bird Devine Summit Trail (Harney County)
For this outing, we’ll meet at the Idlewild Picnic Shelter.
Pack your binoculars, bird books, and lunch for this forest bird walk. Don’t be fooled by the ponderosa pine overstory, there’s enough shrubby edge habitat to attract at least a few shrub-loving birds. After our walk, we’ll have a picnic and talk about forest history, ecology, and management.
We’ll hike through the forest and along shrubby areas where Green-tailed Towhee are often spotted. The Idlewild campground is also a great opportunity to view White-headed Woodpeckers, Cassin’s Finch, and other forest-nesting bird species. There are some interesting rock formations and an area of insect activity where Black-backed Woodpeckers can sometimes be found foraging.
