Field Trip: Winter Along the Crown Zellerbach Trail- Chapman Landing to Scappoose Trailhead *FULL*
Come bird this Columbia County hotspot comprising open farmland, pastures, and wetlands, and providing opportunities to view a nice variety of waterbirds, raptors, and wetland/grassland specialist songbirds. We’ll begin by scanning the channel and flooded bottoms near Chapman Landing. Ultimately, we’ll make our way to the grassy wet fields near the Scappoose Trailhead in search of actively hunting Northern Harriers and American Kestrels, hoping for other large raptors, some conspicuously perching/soaring, others more secretly day-roosting.
Please bring binoculars, scope if you have one, and wear appropriate footwear and layered clothing for cool, wet weather. Also, don’t forget to bring water and snacks (if needed) given the hike’s duration and length.
