The Bird Days of Summer: Queer Birding! at the Sandy River Delta

Join other queer bird nerds on an early morning rainbow ramble at summer birding hotspot Sandy River Delta. We’ll have a gay old time as we explore both open meadows and deciduous woodlands, seeking raptors, woodpeckers and specialty songbirds like Lazuli Bunting and Yellow-breasted Chat.

Bring binoculars (let us know ahead of time if you need to borrow a pair), beginners welcome! A rainbow of birds is expected!

Distance: About 2-3 miles
Elevation Changes: 40 feet
Trail Tread and Width: Flat, packed dirt trails, some uneven terrainPacing: Slow, with frequent stops to view and listen for birds.
Amenities: 2 Vault Toilets in parking lot; large parking lot with ADA parking spaces
Public Transit: No public transit
Rest Stops: No benches along the route
Trails are gravel or packed dirt with little to no elevation change. Pace will be slow (we are birders!) and total walking distance is 2-3 miles. The first half of the morning will be in full sun, the second half will have dappled shade. Note that this site is also an off-leash dog park so some encounters with 4-leggeds are expected. Restrooms available on site. A NW Forest Pass or $5 day pass is required.

Join Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Education and Conservation Team for The Bird Days of Summer, a series of super beginner-friendly programs for anyone curious about birds in nature. We’re combining community-building, exploration, and fun to create safe spaces for people to get to know each other as well as the birds. Binoculars will be provided, and we’ll begin each program with a short “how-to” to help you get started.
